There was plenty of excitement as the Oakland Academy community joined the second annual Touch-A-Truck event hosted by Oakland Early Learning Center. Children climbed aboard heavy equipment, explored emergency vehicles, peeked inside work trucks, and met the people who operate them every day.
But the story of the day wasn’t really about the trucks.
It was about the people behind them.
On a beautiful summer morning, local businesses, tradespeople, first responders, drivers, and community organizations came together with a shared purpose: creating a memorable experience for children and families.
From construction equipment and tow trucks to emergency vehicles and specialty trucks, each participant brought more than just a vehicle. They brought their time, their expertise, and their willingness to engage with curious young minds. Throughout the event, drivers answered questions, demonstrated equipment, shared stories about their work, and gave children a chance to experience something they may never have seen up close before.
For many children, the day was filled with moments of wonder. They sat in seats usually reserved for professionals, looked at equipment larger than life, and learned firsthand about the jobs that help keep our communities running every day.
Events like Touch-A-Truck serve as a reminder that strong communities are built through connection. They happen when local organizations step forward to support families. They happen when workers take time away from busy schedules to invest in the next generation. And they happen when neighbors come together simply because they care about creating positive experiences for local children.
The success of this year’s event was made possible by Oakland Early Learning Center and the many businesses, organizations, drivers, volunteers, and staff members who generously contributed their time and resources. Their participation transformed an ordinary Friday morning into an unforgettable experience for hundreds of families.
Most importantly, the event highlighted something that makes our Oakland community special: people are willing to show up for one another.
That’s the kind of community worth celebrating.
