Is Oakland Academy really tuition-free?
Yes! Oakland Academy is a Michigan public charter school authorized by Grand Valley State University. Families are not charges tuition to attend.
Who is eligible to enroll?
Any students who lives in Michigan can apply, no matter what school district they’re in. We serve Young 5s though 8th grade. Oakland Academy welcomes all learners and does not discriminate based on abilities, acheivement level, learning differences, religion, race, ethnicity, sex, or any other factor.
When should we apply?
You can submit an application any time during the school year. The main enrollment window opens in February,a dn if there are more applicants than seats, we hold a random lottery in March. The earlier you apply during the February window, the better your odds.
What grade levels does Oakland Academy serve?
Young 5s (ages 4-5) though 8th grade. Families can shoose in-person learning on our Portage campus or the Oakland Bridge Program, our online hybrid option.
Is Young 5s Kindergarten, or something esle?
No, Young 5s comes before kindergarten. It’s a bridge year for children who have a late birthday (must turn 5 by December 1) or just need more time to build confidence with reading, writing, numbers, and classroom routines. Students move into regular kindergarten the next year.
What is Oakland Bridge, and is it as good as in-person school?
Oakland Bridge is our tuition-free hybrid program, your child learns at home through a certified curriculum with a parent as a Learning Coach, but goes to campus one day a week for hands-on classes, enrichment, and social time. It’s a real public school program, not homeschooling. It works well for families needing flexibility while staying connected.
Does Oakland Bridge include a computer?
Yes. Full-time Oakland Bridge students receive a school-issued laptop at no cost.
Is Oakland Academy accredited?
Yes! We’re Cognia accredited and authorized by Grand Valley State University.
Do students have to wear uniforms?
Yes, we have a uniform policy to build community and minimize distractions. See our uniform policy page for colors, approved styles, and acceptable items.
Is lunch provided?
Yes, lunch service is avaliable daily. See our food services page for menus, costs, and payment information, Families can also pack lunch.
