Some lessons can’t be found in a textbook.
They happen when students learn that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.
This year, Oakland Academy students, families, and staff came together to support a cause that reaches far beyond the classroom. Through a school-wide food drive, the Oakland Academy community donated approximately 4,500 pounds of nonperishable food to Twelve Baskets Food Pantry, helping support local families experiencing food insecurity throughout Southwest Michigan.
While the number itself is impressive, the real story is found in the lives touched by that generosity.
A Community Need That Started More Than a Decade Ago
Twelve Baskets Food Pantry began with a simple but heartbreaking observation.
Local educators were noticing children coming to school hungry.
Teachers saw firsthand how difficult it was for students to focus, participate, and learn when basic needs weren’t being met. What started as a small church pantry and a backpack food program quickly revealed a larger need within the community.
In June 2014, Twelve Baskets Food Pantry officially opened its doors, serving just 18 families.
Today, the organization serves more than 500 families through weekly food distributions, supports more than 120 families through its Fresh Market program, and delivers food to dozens of homebound seniors each month.
Every week, families throughout the community rely on Twelve Baskets for support.
Every week, the pantry works to ensure no family leaves empty-handed.
Turning Generosity Into Action
At Oakland Academy, community service is more than a project. It’s part of who we are.
Each year, school staff connect directly with Twelve Baskets to learn which food items are needed most. Families then rally together to collect items such as peanut butter, jelly, cereal, crackers, macaroni and cheese, and other easy-to-prepare meals that help families stretch their grocery budgets and put food on the table.
As donations arrive at Twelve Baskets, volunteers immediately sort and stock the items. Within days, many of those same donations are packaged and distributed to local families.
The connection between Oakland Academy and Twelve Baskets is direct, meaningful, and impactful.
The Faces Behind the Food Drive
When people hear that Oakland Academy donated 4,500 pounds of food, they often focus on the number.
But behind every box, every can, and every bag of food is a family.
A parent trying to make ends meet.
A child who needs breakfast before school.
A senior living on a fixed income.
A neighbor facing a difficult season of life.
Volunteers at Twelve Baskets regularly hear stories from families expressing gratitude for the food they receive. Some share that they would have struggled to provide meals without the support of the pantry. Others simply offer heartfelt thanks.
Many distribution days are filled with tears of appreciation and stories of hope.
Those moments remind everyone involved why partnerships like this matter.
Teaching Lessons That Last a Lifetime
One of the most meaningful outcomes of Oakland Academy’s partnership with Twelve Baskets is what students learn along the way.
They learn that helping others matters.
They learn that communities are strongest when people support one another.
They learn that leadership isn’t always about standing in front of a crowd. Sometimes leadership looks like donating a box of cereal, helping collect food, or participating in a project that benefits others.
These lessons help shape compassionate, responsible, and community-minded young people.
Why Community Partnerships Matter
Schools play an important role in preparing students for the future.
At Oakland Academy, that preparation extends beyond academics.
Community partnerships help students see how they can make a positive impact in the world around them. They provide opportunities to practice empathy, generosity, and service while supporting real needs within the local community.
For organizations like Twelve Baskets, partnerships with schools also help provide reassurance that families seeking assistance can continue to receive support when they need it most.
Together, schools, families, volunteers, and community organizations become part of something bigger than themselves.
More Than a School
Families looking for the right school often ask about academics, programs, and opportunities.
Those things matter.
But many families are also looking for something deeper—a school that helps children become caring, engaged, and responsible members of their community.
At Oakland Academy, students are encouraged to grow not only as learners, but as leaders.
The partnership with Twelve Baskets Food Pantry is just one example of how our students are learning that success isn’t measured only by what they achieve for themselves, but also by how they help others.
